On Her Photographic Process

“I allow my photography to lead me in different directions, and to open me to different views of the world.”
Although Zlata Hodžić explores all aspects of the photographic medium, she considers the interaction(s) between model, photographer, and the photographic process to be the most important feature of her work. In her camera’s lens, stories emerge through an artistic collaboration with a model—at first spontaneous, then deliberate.

She’s always looking for something that’s hidden in the personality (or one of the multiple personalities) of the model in front of her. She doesn’t want to dictate or impose, though; in front of her camera, the model should express the being they want to be in that moment.
About the topic of artificial intelligence and photography, she had this to say:
“I am not satisfied by anything I can’t communicate with. There’s no human interaction when I’m in front of the computer—it’s like being able to create people who are exactly the way we want them to be. Using AI, you can’t feel a human relationship.
AI-generated photography has no soul, none of the satisfaction that comes from interaction, companionship, or the exchange of ideas…
Human relations cannot be replaced by new technologies.“
